Your upgrades are consistent across all copies of that same weapon - so if you accidentally sell an upgraded weapon, when you find or buy another one, it will still be at whatever level you upgraded it to.The components look similar in menus, but these are their differences.You might want to be more selective about only upgrading your favorite weapons with the more rare Advanced and Superior Components. Don’t be stingy with using your Basic Components to upgrade. 5 using basic components, but further upgrades will require Advanced and Superior Components, which you can find in chests, randomly scattered in the world, or as drops from bosses or powerful enemies.
This will give you an edge in the early game, and allow you to attack some opponents that are above your own level, thereby letting you gain more experience and level up faster.

Find the Gunsmith to upgrade your main weapon of choice with any Basic Components you have found. We recommend you focus on the main missions until you finish “Trading Places”, as you will have many more locations unlocked by doing this mission. Most other side missions, such as Anabolic Express, will be in unreachable areas or require too high a level to challenge immediately, but they’re worth retrieving for when you might be able to go after them later on. It provides you with an Augmentation Module and many enemies to increase your level against, so it’s worth doing early if you feel under-leveled. 
The side mission “Balls Deep” is one of the only side missions you can complete when it is first given to you. This will guide you around the district vendors and give you some uCreds to spend as well. Once you talk to Poone, you can also do the "Gear Up" side mission, which you get from within Serenity Plus. When you first arrive in Cluster 13, take some time and get to know the area. This does cost 1,000 uCreds, so you might want to save this for times when you really need it, or later in the game when you have more uCreds. This lets you travel to any Transit Station you have visited, but with the convenience of doing this from wherever you are standing. During the mission “Trading Places”, you will unlock Taxi fast travel. Make sure you’re walking past the stations to ensure they are unlocked for any future backtracking you might like to do. This is done by using the Transit Stations around the map, marked by Red M’s. After the mission “Mutual Dependencies”, you will unlock fast travel. Vending Machines on walls can often be shot (or hacked with an upgraded CyberDeck) to give all of its contents over without you needing to pay a single uCred. You can crouch under low obstacles with B, but you can also dodge-roll underneath them much faster with A. You can investigate bodies on the ground to sometimes find a stash of Ucreds or loot. Once you reduce a vehicle's health enough, it will start a detonation timer, much like the explosive barrels. If you are in an area with idle vehicles nearby, you can either use these as cover or as potential explosives. You can speed up their detonation by shooting them more. These can be deadly against your enemies, but also yourself, so make sure you are clear. When you shoot an explosive barrel, it starts a countdown to its detonation, while also displaying the blast radius. To shoot over cover, use LT to aim above it. You won’t be hit by any stray bullets while behind cover unless enemies get behind you. 
Crouching behind cover is a vital part of this game. Firing without LT will shoot lower and hit any close-range targets that are on your level. This also deals increased stagger damage. You can aim higher and above frontline enemies or cover by using LT. If an enemy is below you, or behind a railing, your shots will either miss or be blocked by the obstacles. Despite being a top-down shooter, The Ascent features a vertical aiming system in its 3D environments. Need more help? The XP you earn will help level up your character and each time you level up you’re going to get 3 Skill Points in The Ascent.
